Endometrial Ablation Procedure is a Great Choice for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
The endometrial ablation procedure has revolutionized womens medical health care.It is a great option to present to the right patient for heavy menstrual bleeding or painful periods. Heavy periods and painful periods make up a good percentage of doctor visits every year. Heavy periods are discussed here. An ablation can be done in the office with local anesthesia and minimal recovery time. In fact, most people go back to work the next day. It is designed to cauterize the layer that is shed during menses which then hopefully lessens the amount of bleeding during future periods. About 50% of the time, ablation works so well that you never have a period again! Sometimes it just makes your periods lighter, and then sometimes it doesn't work at all. Overall, there is a 86% reduction in the amount of blood flow during menses. There are several different types of ablation: - Thermachoice Balloon Ablation
- Novasure Impedance Controlled Ablation
What are the Risks with Endometrial Ablation?
As with any procedure there are risks. However, most are very rare. Bleeding and infection are possible. Rarer but more serious side effects are rupture of the uterus and electrical burns to other organs. It is EXTREMELY important NOT to get pregnant after an ablation. Women have died in pregnancy after an ablation. Therefore, I require at least one of the partners to be sterilized. There are also patients who do NOT match the reasons to do an ablation. You must seek the care of a healthcare provider if you have very heavy menses. If you are interested in an endometrial ablation, please call my office to schedule a consultation.
