Salpingectomy..... I Want to Get My Tubes Tied.

Salpingectomy simply means to remove the tube or a portion of it. It is also a term that is commonly used by doctors when a patient gets her tubes tied.

A more formal description of getting your tubes tied would be called a "bilateral tubal ligation".

What is a Tubal Ligation Procedure?

  • Essure

This is my personal favorite. Discussed further here.

  • Laproscopic bilateral tubal ligation

Under anesthesia in the operation room, 2-3 small incisions are made. Using a camera, the doctor can then cut, burn, band, or clip your tubes. Recovery time is about 3-5 days. This method is immediately effective.

  • Postpartum Tubal Ligation

This surgery is done right after a vaginal delivery. A small incision is made under the belly button. The tubes are then tied and cut to remove a portion of the tube. This method is immediate with a recovery of about 2-3 days.

  • Tubal Ligation at the Time of C-Section

This simply means to remove a portion of the tube at the time of your C-Section. There is no added recovery time and it is immediately effective.

Are There Side Effects of Tubal Ligation?

No, not usually. The Fallopian Tube is merely a transport system for a fertilized egg--nothing more. The tube has nothing to do with hormones.

Rare patients describe a "post tubal ligation syndrome" where the tubal ligation has caused them to go into premature menopause. This theory is not main stream thinking and many physicians feel is not warranted.

Other side effects could be directly related to the tubal ligation surgery itself: bleeding or infection.
